You don’t need to spend a fortune to have a great time with your family. We’re going to share some great ideas for free things to do that will help you keep your family entertained – and your wallet full. Keep these activities in mind next time the school holidays roll around, and you’re looking for something to do with the kids without breaking the bank.

Take A Trip To The Museum

Free things to keep the family entertainedMost major centers in New Zealand (and many smaller towns) will have museum that is open to visitors for free. Depending on where you live you might also have access to fantastic, free attractions such as the Air Force Museum in Christchurch, or the Police Museum in Wellington. A day trip to the museum won’t cost you anything, beyond the price of transport, and will help grow inquiring young minds.

Enjoy An Afternoon At The Beach

We’re blessed in New Zealand with easy access to beaches. 75% of Kiwis live within 10km of the coast. In the summer months one of the best free things to do with the family is head down to your nearest beach. Slap on some sunscreen, pile in the car, and enjoy a classic Kiwi day out at the beach.

Go Dog Walking

It’s no secret that most children love dogs. Getting to take the dog for a walk – especially with the whole family in tow- is an enjoyable experience for all. And the best part is that it doesn’t cost you any money, and there’s even some exercise and fresh air thrown in for free. If you don’t have a dog, then consider asking a neighbour or relative if you can walk theirs.

Splash In The School Pool

It’s an unfortunate trend in NZ that school pools are slowly being phased out. You probably have fond memories of learning to swim in your school pool, and your kids might not have the opportunity to do the same. However, if your children attend a school that does have a pool, then in the summer months you might be able to get an access key for free. This can be a great way to cool off in the heat!

Expand Minds At The Library

Alongside a family trip to the museum, another free thing to do when the sun isn’t shining is visit the local library. There’s more to most libraries than books; many now include free computers with Internet access, board games and puzzles, and arts and crafts activities. Take a look at the National Library website to help you find your nearest library.

Having a great time with your family doesn’t mean putting yourself into a difficult financial position. While there can be a lot of pressure (from kids especially) to do expensive activities, you’ll find that everyone has just as much fun doing something that is free.
